Disko Island is located around 70 degrees north, by the west coast of Greenland. It is the largest island in the Disko Bay region, which is why it is also called Qeqertarsuaq - "The Big Island" in Greenlandic.
Disko is part of the Tertiary volcanic province of West Greenland, which formed approximately 60 million years ago when Greenland and North America broke apart. The island is mainly composed of basaltic lavas, which have been eroded by glaciers and rivers into plateaus and valleys. The island is often visited by icebergs calving from glaciers in the region. These icebergs can be seen floating along the coast, creating stunning and ever-changing seascapes. The surrounding waters of Disko Island create conditions to support abundant marine life, including whales, seals, and seabirds.
