Colliding Arctic
Kalaallit Nunaat – the greenlandic name for Greenland translates as 'The Land of the People'. An ancient land and a proud people.
In 2022, I received a donation of several hundred printed geological maps from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS). These maps beautifully portray the geological diversity of Greenland’s ancient landscapes. In the same year, I revisited west Greenland and befriended scientists and artists who were interested in sharing their knowledge about Greenlandic biology, geology, anthropology, and telling their stories and describing experiences about their everyday life in Greenland. The maps and these conversations lay the foundation for this project.
Each art work represents a region of Greenland. The geological maps define the boundaries of these regions, and collage emphasises their stories. I aim to reveal the multifaceted history of Greenland’s landscape – human and ancient through the colour, form and abstraction in these art works.
